Has the toilet in your home or business been running constantly? Not only can this be extremely annoying, but it can also be extremely costly. At Michael Runk Plumbing and Heating, we’ve repaired more than our fair share of malfunctioning toilets over the years and hear complaints of a running toilet all of the time. We wanted to take some time today to talk about some different reasons your toilet may be running constantly.
Is Your Handle Stuck?
The handle on a toilet controls the inner mechanism, allowing water to drain out and refill as needed. Should this handle become stuck or jammed, your toilet will be running without stopping, which could lead to an overflow. Sometimes, simply jiggling the handle will be enough to alleviate the issue, but if your handle is getting stuck, it will likely continue to get stuck and may need to be repaired or replaced by an experienced plumber.
Your Flapper Needs Replacing
The flapper is a part of your toilet that controls the water coming in and out of the tank on your toilet. When the toilet is flushed the flapper closes and keeps water from coming back up into the toilet bowl. As flappers age, they may not be able to close all of the way, which will lead to your toilet running when it shouldn’t. Luckily, replacing a toilet flapper is an easy repair for an experienced plumber.
There Could Be a Blockage
If you have a blockage somewhere in your system, then this could be the reason that your toilet is running. Water needs to drain out of the toilet, but if a blockage is preventing it, your toilet may continue to discharge water trying to clear the blockage. This can lead to your toilet overflowing, which is something that you definitely don’t want to have happen. Instead, have your toilet inspected when you notice that it’s running, and avoid all of the unnecessary issues an overflowing toilet will cause.
Your Float is Out of Place
The level of water within your tank is controlled by a float. If the float is lower in the tank, it will cause too weak of a flush, and if the float is set too high, water will spill into your overflow tube and will cause your toilet to run constantly. If your toilet is running constantly, simply adjusting the float in your tank may be all you have to do.
