The planet needs your help. Municipalities across the United States are expected to experience significant water shortages over the next ten years. Although legislation is being written to assist with water conservation efforts, there are some ways you can conserve water now. These are five easy ways to can conserve water in your home.
1. Invest in WaterSense Products
What if there was a way to continue everything you’re doing but still conserve water? It’s possible with WaterSense products. “WaterSense” is an award given by the EPA to water-using products that meet several important water-saving criteria. If a product meets their criteria, they are awarded a WaterSense label. Virtually all water-using fixtures and appliances can be awarded a WaterSense label, so you can easily make the switch.
2. Turn Off the Tap When You Aren’t Actively Using it
We’ve all left the faucet on while brushing our teeth, or “warming up” the shower for way too long. One way you can do your part in conserving water is to turn off the tap whenever you are not using it. You can always switch it back on once you need more water. This tiny change can lead to large amounts of water saved over time.
3. Take Shorter Showers
You’ve heard it time and time again, but taking shorter showers truly is an easy way to conserve water. The average showerhead could use up to five gallons of water per minute. That means that even a two-minute reduction in your shower time can save gallons upon gallons of water every day. Gradually start to cut down your shower time until you’ve reached an appropriate length that satisfies your needs and conserves water.
4. Don’t Run Appliances Until They’re Full
It may be tempting to immediately wash your favorite clothing items after a long day, but wait until you have enough dirty laundry to fill the bin before running the washing machine. The same thing applies to your dishwasher. Avoid running it after every meal. Instead, load it completely and run it. Both dishwashers and washing machines use a lot of water, so using them sparingly will help you conserve water.
5. Fix Leaks Immediately
No matter if a leak is big or small, they can waste a lot of water. Repair any leaky faucets, loose joints, or hairline pipe fractures as soon as you find them. Sometimes leaks can be hidden, so be sure to inspect your home periodically for any signs of leaks behind walls or other materials. This will not only help you save water, but it will also help protect your plumbing.
